Experience in the circus definitely could be put to good use when you’re washing your bub because it really is a juggling act. A very slippery, wriggly juggling act. That’s when a good baby bath really does come in handy and is worth it’s weight in gold.

If you’re considering purchasing a baby bath, the two main styles you’ll come across are baby baths and baby bath support seats. A baby bath is a self contained product, where you can add water and wash your bub in it. However, with a baby bath support seat you’ll need to wash your baby in a bigger unit (for instance your regular bath, a sink or shower) as it is not a self contained unit that can hold water.

To find the best baby baths out there, we surveyed Aussie parents about the baby baths they used, loved and would recommend and analysed the results. You can read our 2022 Best Baby Baths in Australia list here, which also includes a handy shopping guide of what to look for when considering your options. The baby bath that topped our annual list was the Skip Hop Moby Smart Sling 3 Stage Baby Bath, which I product tested for The Baby Edit.

Key takeaways after testing this product

I love this product! I used the Skip Hop Moby Smart Sling 3 Stage Baby Bath when Mimi was a newborn to around 8 months old. As a first time parent, the idea of bathing a tiny newborn was a little daunting at first but I really felt this product helped boost my confidence.

I really like the shape of this baby bath and that it’s relatively shallow and comes with a newborn sling. While you should always have one hand on bub, with this product I do feel it would be incredibly difficult for an accident to occur as they’re supported in the mesh sling with nowhere to move. Testing other products, even with one hand on her, I felt she slipped around a lot which never happened with this one. Even though the shape is rather shallow, I don’t feel like lots of water splashed out of the Moby. But to be honest, I never used that much water in the baby baths I tested.

The Moby advertises itself as a bit of an all rounder where baby bathing is concerned. This product is a baby bath and baby support/seat all-in-one and is designed to grow with your bub over three stages. Stage one is to be used from newborn to 3 months, stage two from 3-6 months and stage three for 6+ months when your bub can’t sit up and support themselves. I didn’t really use this past 8 months as I felt Mimi was outgrowing the size of the bath, so can’t comment on how effective it would be for a slightly older bub.

When Mimi was a newborn I really liked the mesh sling that this product comes with as it is like having an extra pair of hands to help you. This sling locks into two ergonomic positions that offer your bub support and the second position supports infants learning to sit. Once your bub can sit up unaided, you can remove the mesh aid and use the Moby as a regular baby bath. In this mode, there’s a bit more room for your growing bub.

I liked the cute whale design of this bath and that it could be used anywhere as it’s super portable. I think it’s definitely a good baby bath especially if you live in an apartment or home without a bath or laundry sink.

Cleaning the Moby was relatively easy too. It’s quick to dry and the mesh in my experience never grew mildew. The Moby also has a drain plug too, which is a feature I highly recommend when buying a baby bath. Without a drain plug, you will have to lift a heavy bath of water and tip it out into a sink, which can be a little painful especially after you’ve given birth. Having a built in drain makes it really convenient to tip out but it’s also good if you need to readjust the temperature of your bath water before bub hops in.

I constantly recommend the Skip Hop Moby Smart Sling 3 Stage Baby Bath to all my friends. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a baby bath that is newborn friendly and feels like an extra pair of hands when washing your little one.
